"Reading Chest has been a completely transformative experience for my son. I had one quick reader - his elder sister - and was at a bit of a loss with a little boy who just couldn't get on with his school books, and was evidently falling behind. It's taken a good few months, but the excitement of getting books in the post - and of the lovely colourful charts and stickers, not to mention the certificates for achievement - has done the trick! He reads fluently now, and with real enjoyment - something I'm still amazed by. The Reading Chest service is wonderful, and I would recommend it to anyone who feels they need to do a little bit more to support a child's early reading. SR. Read more Tell us what you think

World Book Day - Reading For Pleasure!

Wednesday 1st March 2023

We want to spread the word about why World Book Day is SO important! Most of us are familiar with the costume rigmarole every year – but at the very heart of this day is reading for pleasure. Reading schemes are not necessarily associated with reading for pleasure, but Reading Chest is here to change that!

Learning to read can be a real challenge. Navigating different reading schemes, making sense of phonics, worrying about reading levels and book bands might not seem like a fun prospect for children or parents. Yet the learning to read process can be make or break as to whether a child grows up reading for pleasure – so that is why we’re on a mission to make learning to read exciting and engaging for children.

Reading for pleasure is not just about being able to read Harry Potter, but is also about the reading journey to reach that Harry Potter moment. By providing inspiring, quality books at the perfect level to as many young readers as possible, Reading Chest’s ethos is to make the learning to read journey as enjoyable as possible and nurture a love of reading for life!

Back to dressing up for World Book Day! If you’re in need of some costume inspiration, here are some of our easy last minute ideas -

• Make the most of onesies that you might have around the house to be different animal characters.
• Go for Roald Dahl old favourites such as Charlie Bucket, Grandma Josephine, Grandpa Jo (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) - suitable tatty clothes and a golden ticket
• Harry (Harry and the Bucket full of Dinosaurs) – boy clothes with a bucketful of Dinosaurs; Mr Happy - wear yellow and smile; Little Miss Sunshine – wear yellow, red bows in hair and smile; Mr Bump or Little Miss Whoops – wear blue with a couple of bandages; Mr Forgetful – is a good way out if you get really stuck!
